I know LLMs are interesting as toys, but they are fundamentally problematic:

- Even if you self-host an LLM, its model is created unethically elsewhere so it's not really independent or ethical.

- LLM creation is extremely resource-intensive, which is burning the planet and destroying communities.

- Hardware prices are being driven so high that ordinary people cannot afford to buy computers.

- LLMs are designed to deskill people and make them dependent on corporate models.

@homegrown I feel like you're posting this to see what camp people fall into and that's kinda shitty.

Anyway, I don't support LLMs for MOST things. I do find they are remarkably good at making fictional stories for entertainment. That's... really it.

My two cents.

"I feel like you're posting this to see what camp people fall into and that's kinda shitty."

I can promise you I'm not. LLMs are just awful unethical tech.

"I do find they are remarkably good at making fictional stories for entertainment. "

LLMs aren't making anything. They're jumbling up bits of writing that have been stolen from uncredited human authors.

LLMs are laundering plagiarism. Take away the human data and LLM output turns to gibberish

@homegrown Yes, I'm aware of this.

It doesn't change the fact that they are good at generating fictional stories for entertainment purposes.

I do not support LLM's, just to be clear.

@Ember That's okay! Everyone has different viewpoints.

I don't support LLMs, to be clear, once again. They can go straight into the recycling bin.

I'd rather have original content then regurgitated content.

@westfox35 if you don't support LLMs then why exactly are you giving excuses to and arguing in favor of LLMs and people who do like them?

@Ember I'm not arguing in favor of them. I just said they were good at generating fictional stories. It's regurgitated content. I don't support it, either.

It doesn't change the fact that they can generate a story, regurgitated or not, based on a prompt you give it which could be anything you imagine.

TL;DR I'm giving an example of why they are so appealing to the younger generation, especially in America where the public school system has been gutted.

@westfox35 i'm sure growyourown.services is well aware of the superficial reasons some like it.

they're good at generating nonsense yes, but "nonsense" is not what
anyone is going to interpret from "they are good at generating fictional stories for entertainment purposes."

idk, if you're not trolling, maybe consider not using phrases like "It doesn't change the fact that they are good at ..." as that's something that people who
do like LLMs love to say for things that are just plain false

@Ember Thanks. I'll take this into consideration on future toots.

As I mentioned in my other toot I had a stroke two years ago (roughly) so it's hard for me to put my words out there correctly. And no, I'm not bullshitting or using it as an excuse. It is what it is.
